Acne

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often results in the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, or cysts, primarily on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders.

What Causes Acne?

Excess oil production

Oil glands in the skin (sebaceous glands) produce an oily substance called sebum, which can combine with dead skin cells and block hair follicles, leading to acne.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and certain medical conditions, can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, leading to acne flare-ups.

Bacteria

The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is naturally present on the skin, but when trapped in blocked follicles, it can multiply rapidly and cause inflammation.

Genetics

Acne can run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition to the condition.
